What Now? It is a good question to ask when not sure what to do next? I find myself in this place a lot lately wondering what is the vision for my life. It is difficult and uncomfortable, to be frank and honest. I like a sure thing, and where to go next. It is difficult for this planner of life. I thought at this stage of life it would be simpler and more secure, but then following the LORD is more of his vision; a wonderful, fun filled adventure. Who would know life can really be scary, exciting, fearful, fun, and adventurous all at the same time!
I heard of vision boards and thought how fun it would be to create one, so with a couple of friend’s help and encouragement, I created one. The process is so much fun. Travel photos abounded and there wasn’t enough room on the board for some of the others areas I enjoy. Here it is:
I took a photo and showed some friends. The one guiding me through the process said to divide it into two different ones. A travel one and a life one. I went back, bought another foam core board, and found scrapbook colored pages to create the background. Again the process was so much fun to create with the colors and words. It set for a day before gluing everything in place which was good as it needed to be a bit more simpler. Then, I glued on the images and words for good. The first one is Vacation Vision Board and second is Life Vision Board. Enjoy!
In creating the vision boards, ask the question “What do you want to do?” about 50 times or so and record the answers. Then ask yourself, “why” and/or “what” for each of the items listed. This helps to discern your values. It helps to dig down and get to what a person really wants in all areas of life. Some things will be marked out and not put on the vision board. And that is ok. It really is a way for you and Holy Spirit to wrestle out the question of What now?
A few goals and dreams may surprise you. For me, I learned how much I really do want to travel and see the world. I have always loved to travel and go see different areas, but it really was magnified in the vision board. Also, most of the pictures were ones with water. Water is calming and refreshing. Growing up around lakes in the NE part of Oklahoma, and family camping trips helped to create a love and wanting to continue the experience. Now, my favorite places with water are beaches with sand, and seashells to find and collect.
Another surprise was writing. A quote which speaks to me is from Gustavo Flaubert, “The art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe.” I have found this to be true in writing papers for Old and New Testament classes, and in writing blog posts. Putting words in order for sewing instruction projects started this writing process many years ago with my first job as a Home Economist with Hancock Fabrics. It was a great experience, and has helped in many ways. I look forward to honing additional writing skills.
The LORD revealed many truths about myself to help propel me in the vision He has for my life. If you are stuck in answering the “What Now?”, then I would challenge you to ask yourself the question “What do I want?” 50 times. Then ask why and/or what. Remember the reasons are your values. Next, create your vision board (or boards). Share those with me in the comments below, and with family and friends. Trust the process and enjoy the experience! Wrestling with Holy Spirit over these things will be rewarding. It might be different than you expected but it will reveal truth of who God created you to be. We are each intricately unique, and fashioned from the hands of the most imaginative and creative God.
I look forward to living out of the visions the LORD has revealed. Being is better than doing. God fashioned me to be what both of the vision boards enhance. Join me on this journey of discovering and living out revealed visions!
