Family Camping Adventure at Great Salt Plains State Park
We had another great family camping adventure at Great Salt Plains State Park. This time our niece drove down from Nebraska to spend the weekend with us. We were pleasantly surprised when a car with out of state tags showed up before dark. After helping get her bags in the RV, we enjoyed the beginning of summer, and the warm Oklahoma evening. My brother’s friends, the avid RV’ers also joined us once again or maybe we joined them! Camping is certainly fun with friends. We had wonderful conversation to end the night.
The next day was full of conversations, resting, taking a few walks around the beach area, and enjoying the scenery. The dog went as well so he could cool off in the refreshing water.
Crystal Digging
One of the features of the Great Salt Plains State Park is digging for crystals. You drive around the park to another entrance. Park the vehicle and follow the signs for the digging area.
Don’t forget your bucket, shovel, sunscreen, paper towels and water (for cleaning your hands), and chair (if you want to sit and watch others). Find a spot to start digging. You might want to get a few tips before you go. Being newbies we didn’t know what to do, so we did a quick google search on digging for crystals at the Great Salt Plains. First you will be digging a bit until water starts coming up into the hole. Then you reach in with your hands and start sifting through the clay-type mud. You might also hear the shovel scraping crystals at you are digging. They are small arrow shaped crystals. It was an experience you might want to add to your bucket list at least once.
Fellowship
After lunch and resting a bit, it was decided to go for a swim in the lake. Even the dog thought it was a good idea. We walked back down to the beach area and found a spot to get in and get your feet wet without getting stickers. It was cool and refreshing.
Sitting around the camp area in between the RV’s, and visiting with family and friends is a great time. Life is best lived in fellowship with others, discussing life and getting to know each other better. What a privilege!
It will be a few weeks before we are able to go camping again in our RV. Maybe it will be a different Oklahoma State Park. Stay tuned for the next family camping adventure. If you want to read about our first adventures, it is here.
Until then enjoy,
Dawn
